Environment Variables - How To

Enviroment Variables

What are they?

They variables used throughout programs and games, stored in the registry of your Operating System.

How do you change them?

It all depends on what OS you have.

Steps for Windows 95/98/ME:

  • Click on Control Panel
  • Click on System [Properties]
  • Click on the Advanced Tab
  • Click Change Environment Variables or Enviroment Variables
  • Click the New button to add, click the Edit button to edit, or click the Delete button to delete
  • [Reboot if neccessary.]

 

Steps for Windows 2000/XP:

  • Click Start to open Control Panel
  • Click System Properties
  • Click on the Advanced Tab
  • Click Change Environment Variables
  • Optional?: Reboot (Recommended, but not neccessary)

 

Steps for Windows Vista/7:

By default Windows views it in Category view, you may need to view all to access it faster

Category View:

  • Open up the Control Panel
  • Click on System and Security
  • Click on the System link
  • Click on “Advanced system settings”, in the sidebar
  • Click on the Advanced tab (located at the bottom)
  • Click New, Edit, or Delete to Add, Edit, or Delete
  • Click Ok and Ok
  • Reboot is unneccessary

All Itemed-View:

  • Open up the Control Panel
  • Click on System
  • Click on Advanced system settings, in the left sidebar
  • Click on the Advanced tab (located at the bottom)
  • Click New, Edit, or Delete to Add, Edit, or Delete
  • Click Ok and Ok
  • Reboot is unneccessary
